Logo - SBMPSaltford Business Network is very pleased to welcome the SALTFORD BRASS MILL PROJECT (SBMP) to its membership. The Brass Mill is a scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade II* Listed Building and is one of the major attractions bringing visitors to Saltford. SBMP is the registered charity (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) which provides visitor access and the Education and Interpretation Centre inside the Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The Project conducts research and delivers talks, develops displays, models and mock-ups and maintains the garden and the building, working with Bath and North East Somerset Unitary Authority on more major works. It is opened to the public for two to four days a month from May to October and for group visits, but the Project’s work continues year-round.

Saltford Brass Mill was in operation from the 1720s until 1925 for the manufacture of brass “hollow ware” (pans, vats and kettles) and brass sheet.   There were four waterwheels and four annealing furnaces.  The remaining waterwheel is made of iron and survived because it was adapted to drive a dynamo to provide electric light for a squash court built in the mill in the late 1920s.  The single standing annealing furnace structure survived (as a wine cellar!) and is unique in the region, and probably in Europe.
